Lower
Gun Floor through the gun port doors you will see the Great
Barrier Ditch which used to run all the way down to the River
Medway. The 2 arched brick bridges spanning the ditch were
built around 1890 to replace the earlier drawbridges.
The pit below the
gun ports prevented an enemy climbing in through the gun ports.
The single fireplace
provided some comfort for the gunners based here and allowed
them to heat the shot to fire at ship's rigging if attacked
from the river.
