The
timber floored upper gun floor had a similar function to the
lower Gun Floor. The gun ports here housed lightweight cannon
known as carronades.
The cupboard immediately
to the left of the door, housed the tools or "sidearms"
needed to operate the carronages. the large opening high above
the two gun ports helped the dispersal of smoke.
By the steps at
the far left hand corner of the Upper Gun Floor there is an
ammunition shaft which also acted as a light well. A lantern
hung at the top of the shaft illuminating the stairs via the
opening strategic points.
At the top of the
stairs, just before you step out into the open, there is a
door to your left which gave access to a concealed observation
point
